Gordon's Bay was named after Robert Jacob Gordon, a Dutch Military officer
who commanded the Cape garrison in the latter part of the 18th century.
Today the picturesque town of Gordon's Bay combines the flavour of an
international holiday resort with the charm of an old-style coastal town.
In summer the narrow streets and bustling beaches of Gordon's Bay come
alive with the sounds of happy holiday makers. Gordon's Bay is close to

SOMERSET WEST AREA INFORMATION
Somerset West (5 Kms from Strand) is situated at the foot of the Helderberg and Hottentots Holland
Mountains. Somerset West is named after the British Governor, Lord Charles Somerset.
In 1817 four farmers who owned different parts of Vergelegen, asked the governor for permission
to build a church and a village around it. Permission was granted and the village was named
“Somerset”. But there was confusion with the town of Somerset
East in the Eastern Cape and so therefore in 1850 the name was changed to Somerset West.
